Abstract
This paper reviews the developments from recent studies on the derivation of consistent strain fields in modelling constrained media elasticity and on deriving consistent stress resultants and thermal stress fields. The review will consider the Hu-Washizu principle as the variational basis for the existence of the so-called Barlow points where stresses (or strains) have the highest accuracy.
