Abstract
A C0 continuous four-noded cylindrical shell element with independent interpolations for in-plane displacements u and v; transverse displacement w and face rotations θx, and θy are made efficient by using substitute smoothed shape functions for w in membrane strain evaluation. This removes "membrane locking", making it the simplest efficient quadrilateral cylindrical shell element available.
