Abstract

It has been the practice to credit dual authorship to the new names proposed by Cuvier and Valenciennes in their monumental contribution to ichthyology, 'Histoire Naturelle Des Poissons', comprising of 22 volumes published from 1828-1849. Baron Cuvier passed away in 1832 while volume 9 was in press but Valenciennes who continued the work thereafter retained the name of his former senior colleague in the subsequent numbers of the series presumably as a mark of courtesy.
