Abstract
A short review of the progress made in optics towards the development of the emerging field of optoelectronics is presented. It is argued that new field is not only changing the face of information technology, at present based mostly on semiconductor microelectronics, but it is also making it possible to examine experimentally many fundamental questions in basic physics, at the frontiers of knowledge. The march of optics towards the technology of pure “photonics” is also discussed briefly.
