Circulation in the shallow waters of the shelf region using sea bed drifters

Abstract

As part of the programme of studies on the ‘Circulation in hte shelf waters off the Goa coast’ being undertaken by the National Institute of Oceanography, plastic sea bed drifters of Woodhead design, made indigenously under the supervision of the authors, were tested for their performance and efficiency. Test results of some preliminary studies made off Goa and bombay using these drifters are presented. The importance of these studies in the development of fisheries, investigations on upwelling, marine pollution, beach erosion and sedimentation in harbours, is discussed.
