Abstract

The magnetic field dependent rf losses in Bi2212 single crystals show two distinct features. 1)Unlike the usual behavior, the loss is a minimum at a non-zero field HM(T) and 2) dp/dH exhibits a maximum at HD(T)HM(T) with an a accompanying minimum in the frequency net coupling (Josephson+magnetic) between the CuO bilayers at HM(T). Feature 2 is a signature of the decoupling of the CuO bilayers and we argue that HD(T) is also the field at which flux lines decompose into 2D vortices in the planes. The temperature behavior of the decoupling field is in agreement with the predictions of Glazman and Koshelev [Phys.Rev.B43,2835(1991)].
