Abstract

The syntheses, electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility of several pseudooctahedral species of the type NiAB · H20 are reported (A = bidentate ligand, B = tridentate ligand). The anhydrous species NiAB can also be isolated and on the basis of electronic spectra they have square pyramidal geometry. The equilibrium NiAB + H2O ⇌ NiAB · H2O occurs in solution. The thermodynamics of this equilibrium has been studied using variable temperature spectral data. The ΔH° and ΔS° values lie close to −13 kcal mol−1 and −35 eu respectively for all the systems studied.
