Abstract

We describe a paleopheid snake (Palaeophis vastaniensis sp. nov.) from the early Eocene deposits of Vastan Lignite Mine, western India. This is the oldest known Cenozoic snake from South Asia. The new taxon is diagnosed on the basis of greatly enlarged synapophyses on posterior precloacal vertebrae. Intracolumnar variation in vertebral morphology indicates the presence of the derived paralymphatic system of crown-group snakes in palaeophids. Morphological specialisations for marine habitat in the new taxon are consistent with sedimentological evidence for esturine to shallow marine depositional environments represented in the Vastan Lignite
