Abstract
Alkali induced disproportionation of 7,8-dimethoxy-2-(3',4'-methylenedioxyphenethyl)iso-quinolinium bromide (XIII) and 2-(3',4'-dimethoxyphenethyl)-7,8-methylenedioxyisoquinolmium bromide (XVII) affords the corresponding dihydroisoquinolines which on cyclization with alcoholic hydrochloric acid give tetrahydroberberine (VIII) and tetrahydroepiberberine (IX) respectively.
