Abstract
An attempt has been made to develop a detailed understanding of the flow generated by a disc turbine in a fully baffled cylindrical vessel. Mean flow and turbulence intensities have been measured for the bulk region using a laser Doppler anemometer. An energy balance around the impeller has been performed and the hydraulic efficiency of the disc turbine was found to be about 65%. The effect of vessel diameter on flow characteristics has also been studied. Part I provides a set of boundary conditions to the model as well as the necessary and sufficient set of data to evaluate the model performance.
