Abstract
The major vegetation types (including many forest types) of the region are listed and the characteristics of the flora described and discussed from the viewpoint of its very rich genetic diversity. The region is a major centre for orchids, ferns, bamboos, species of Musa, Rhododendron and Hedychium, and wild relatives of cultivated plants. Further study is required since much of the region remains unexplored.
