Abstract
A Fabry-Pérot cavity with intracavity index modulated medium is considered. It is shown that the index modulation enhances the quality factor associated with certain selective modes of the combined structure. This enhancement of the quality factor is especially important in studies of the strong interaction between the atoms and the cavity field. Examined are the changes in the linear response of atoms contained in an index modulated cavity and demonstrated is a sizeable reduction in the linewidth of the vacuum field Rabi split resonances. Also shown is the further possibility of enhancing the atom field coupling by taking into account the spatial field distribution in such a cavity.
