Abstract

Previous studies by primate behaviorists on establishment of dominance ranks and its determinants in free-ranging nonhuman primates have been done on natural groups where a dominance hierarchy already existed. A qualitative observation of the "peers-only" raised infants was conducted to study the fundamental determinants of dominance hierarchy and natural hierarchical behavior. Ss were 5 male and 7 female rhesus monkeys divided into 2 groups. It is concluded that physical strength is the basic determinant of dominance.
