Abstract
As exposition of the theoretical concepts behind genetic distance has been made. Problems relating to choice of characters, non-repeatable classification configuration, heterosis as explained by genetic divergence and methods of classifying a large number of entries are dealt with special reference to plant breeding. The role of genetic divergence in plant breeding has been stressed with examples.
