Abstract
Synthesis, liquid-crystalline, and photophysical properties of a series of novel azopyridine-containing silver complexes have been described. Bis(4-phenyl,4'-azopyridyl)-containing silver complexes exhibiting nematic, smectic, and cholesteric liquid-crystalline phases have been prepared. Photoisomerization of the azopyridyl chromophores in these materials have also been investigated. Glassy solids exhibiting the characterstic iridescent colors as well as Grandjean texture associated with the helical structure of the cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase could be obtained by rapid cooling of the cholesteric liquid-crystalline phases to 0 °C.
