Abstract
The onset of convection at small optical depth in a metal-deficient star is shown to arise as a result of the decrease in the adiabatic temperature gradient because of the dissociation of the hydrogen molecules and to a steep increase in the radiative temperature gradient brought about as a result of the increase in opacity.
