Abstract

The propagation and attenuation of heat pulses in superconductors is described. The discontinuous change in phonon lifetime when hω = 2 Δ, the superconducting energy gap, is utilized to convert a pulse of heat into a spectrum with a large density of phonons at a frequency ω = 2 Δ/h. This frequency can be tuned with a magnetic field (which changes 2 Δ) and is used for phonon propagation spectroscopy in Ge : Sb and Al2O3 : V3+.
