Abstract
Thermal inactivation and urea denaturation profiles of partially purified glutamine synthetase from normal and water-stressed finger millet (E. coracana) seedlings were compared. The enzyme from stressed seedlings was more stable to heat inactivation and urea denaturation, suggesting that the enzyme structure was probably altered in response to water deprivation. Thermal stability studies of aspartate transcarbamylase from normal and water-stressed finger millet seedlings showed enhanced activities of the enzyme upon heating. Although this enhancement was lower in the stressed than in the normal enzyme, the presence of L-proline brought the activity of the enzyme from stressed seedlings on par with that of the normal enzymes.
