Abstract
High-Tc superconductors have critical currents that decay sharply with increasing magnetic field. We solve Bean's model for Jc decaying exponentially with H and obtain qualitative agreement with existing magnetization data. We show that Hc1 cannot be obtained from the linear part of the magnetization curve; it can only be inferred from a low-field anomaly in the hysteresis curve. Presently quoted values of Hc1, based on the linear part of the magnetization curve, are gross overestimates.
