Abstract

Rapidly solidified ribbons of Inconel 625 have been found to contain austenite (γ) grains of 1-2 μ m size having a cellular-dendritic morphology and heterogeneously distributed particles of the MC phase. This microstructure has been found to be quite different from the microstructure of conventionally processed and solution-treated Inconel 625. The stability of the cellular-dendritic morphology of the γ matrix to thermal treatments and the precipitation of the intermetallic γ ' and the δ phases as well as of the M23C6 phase during aging have been studied. The precipitation behaviour of the melt-spun alloy has been compared with that of the conventionally processed alloy. The precipitation kinetics of the γ " and the δ phases have been found to be faster in the former than in the latter.
