Abstract
The low temperature specific heat of a random Ising chain is studied. A calculation based on the method of single-spin fields yields a specific heat that depends quadratically on temperature whereas the exact specific heat is linear. The linear behaviour is seen to arise from states which involve flipping a macroscopic number of spins and which are missed in the single-spin description.
