Abstract

The electromagnetic field distribution produced by an arbitrary field incident on a rough, layered structure is calculated assuming that the roughness is small. Results are then specialized to the Sarid geometry with grating structure. The excitation of long- and short-range surface plasmons is studied in detail. The local field enhancements produced due to the two types of surface plasmons are calculated. The differences in local fields can result in significant changes in nonlinear phenomena in molecules adsorbed on such surfaces.
