Abstract
A general theory for the treatment of spontaneous emission from a system of N identical two-level atoms or molecules is developed. The master equation for the reduced density operator of the atomic system alone is obtained and is used to derive an expression for the radiation rate. Both exact and approximate solutions are discussed.
