Abstract

It has been demonstrated that the variation of the fluidity of metallic alloys with temperature is best explained by using the free volume theory due to Hildebrand. Twelve systems for which data on density and viscosity are available have been shown to conform to this behaviour. The ultimate volume at which the atomic motion ceases has been shown to vary linearly between the two pure component values. This approach compares favourably with the Arrhenius form of representation and with Andrade equation of viscosity.
