Abstract

In northern India when the summer temperature ranged between 38 and 44 degree C and the light intensity was as high as 45 klux, the leaves of sunflower, mung bean and maize showed a differential change in the content of chlorphylls and in chlorophyll a:b during day time. Shading leaves without altering temperature reduced the magnitude of the change. This variation in chlorophyll content was independent of change in water potential and stomatal resistance. The observed ratio could possibly provide an adaptation mechanism to high temperature and radiation.
