Abstract

The influence of water stress, temperature and light treatments on germination of two range grasses was investigated. Seeds failed to germinate at 40 degree C and showed best germination at 15 degree C. Increasing levels of water stress reduced germination in the two species. Seeds of Lolium perenne withstood greater water stress as compared to those of Chloris gayana . Red light promoted germination, while far-red light completely inhibited the same in C. gayana and markedly reduced the germination of L. perenne . Increasing exposure to red light had a faviourable effect on germination of two species at 24 ° C.
