Abstract
A series of studies on the predictability of the tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere system were performed at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The results provide the first estimate of the upper limit on the predictability of the coupled system. A new parameterization of the large-scale part of the convective heating in the atmosphere developed at the Centre has led to the development of a simple low-cost model for the atmospheric surface winds which is suitable for coupled modeling studies.
