Abstract
In this paper it is shown that the continuous absorption coefficient of the negative hydrogen ion is most reliably determined by a formula for the absorption cross-section which involves the matrix element of the momentum operator. A new absorption curve for H- has been determined which places the maximum at λ8500 A; at this wave length the atomic absorption coefficient has the value 4.37×10-17cm2.
