Abstract

A new dominant orthorhombic phase with lattice constants a = 4.28 Å, b = 4.34 Å and c = 12.84 Å, has been found to be coexisting with the conventional yttrium cuprate phase (123) in the YBa2Cu2PbOx s superconductor prepared by pyrophoric process. The bulk specimen exhibits Tc (onset) at 93 K and Tc (R = 0) at 80 K. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation reveals that lead is present in the material in both, the +2 and +4, valence states. The presence of lead increases the Cu2+ valence state and is possibly responsible for a lower Tc (R = 0).
