Abstract

The influence of ageing in the sensitization temperature range 823-1123K for ageing times of up to 1000 h on the microstructure and tensile properties at room temperature of a type 316 stainless steel has been investigated. The principal microstructural change is the precipitation of M sub 23 C sub 6 carbides. The strength properties show an increase when aged at 823K, are not altered significantly when aged at 923K and show a decrease with ageing time when aged at 1023 and 1123K. Ductility is reduced by ageing; the ductility reduction is associated with increasing tendency for intergranular fracture due to grain boundary precipitates. Graphs, photomicrographs.
