Abstract

A method of making dielectric measurements in situ under pressures up to 60 kbars is described. This technique has been used to investigate the effect of very high pressure on the activation energy for conduction in an aluminosilicate glass system. The activation energy increased rapidly at first with pressure and then exhibited saturation at pressures above 30 kbars. This investigation also showed a remanent increase in the activation energy in a glass compacted at a pressure of 42.2 kbars. The results obtained are discussed in the light of current models for the charge migration in soda glass.
