Abstract
We provide estimates of the extent to which each of the 43 vegetation types of India still persist as forest formations and at various stages of degradation, as also the extent to which these are represented in the present day network of wild life sanctuaries and national parks. Based on this analysis, we suggest a series of localities which should be accorded the highest priority in our attempts to conserve the whole spectrum of India's biological diversity.
