Abstract
The finite difference method together with the Novozhilov shell theory has been used to formulate the seismic response of a pressure vessel. In the circumferential direction, a Fourier series variation is used for loads and deformations. The static problem (i.e. internal pressure problem) is solved using Potters' scheme. Lumped mass method is adopted for mass matrix determination. Simultaneous iteration method is used to solve the unsymmetric, non-standard eigenvalue problem. Modal superposition technique is used to determine the time-domain response of the structure when subjected to an earthquake excitation.
