Abstract
Some of the fundamental aspects of directed melt oxidation and infiltration are described with emphasis on the oxidative growth of alumina matrix composites from molten aluminium alloys. Examples are given of the microstructure of ceramic-and metal-matrix composites that can be created by appropriate choice of alloy, temperature and atmosphere.
