Abstract
Cadmium substituted thallium cuprates of the type Tl1−xCdxBaLaCuO5 (R = La and Nd) have been synthesized for various values of x. A single phase region exists for x = 0 to 0.4. Superconductivity was observed over the region 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 with transition temperatures in the range 38-48 K. X-ray diffraction data suggest that cadmium substitutes for thallium, thereby increasing the number of holes in the Cu---O dx2−y2 (σ*) conduction band. A plot of Tc versus x showed a maximum when the formal oxidation state of copper is close to 2.3 as observed in other superconducting copper oxide systems.
