Abstract
It has been established earlier that the 19F NMR shift is positive in the first half of the group of rare-earth trifluorides and negative in the second half of the group-a fact which suggests that the shift is proportional to the thermal average of the rare-earth spin. We have studied the 19F NMR in SmF3 in the temperature range of 300° to 1.3°K. Though Sm belongs to the first half, the 19F shift is negative throughout the temperature range. It is suggested that the anomalous behavior in SmF3 may be due to the effect of strong crystalline fields on the spin average of Sm3+ ion.
