Abstract
We have used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the oxidation states of Hg and Cu in HgBa2CuO4+δ. Contrary to the general expectations, we have observed three chemically different species of Hg. Two different types of Hg ions are in the 2+ oxidation state and the other species is present in an unusual oxidation state of 3+. Cu also shows the mixed-valent character (1+,2+ and 3+) in this superconductor. Argon-annealed HgBa2CuO4+δ shows a decrease in Hg(III) content suggesting that Hg plans an important role in this superconductor. An internal redox mechanism is predicted in HgBa2CuO4+δ.
