Abstract

A new method is developed to estimate the bubble sizes in a large scale bubble column employing non-Newtonian solutions. It is based on estimating the single bubble rise velocity (ubr) from a plot of the square of superficial gas velocity (U2 G) and the measured gas hold-up raised to a power of 2.5 ( ε2.5) and back calculation of volume to surface mean bubble diameter (dus) from Hirose and Moo-Young's correlation for ubr<0.3m/s or Davies and Taylor's equation for ubr>0.3m/s. The experimental data collected with carboxymethyl cellulose solutions confirm the validity of the method.
