Abstract
The effect of fine particles on gas hold-up was studied in 0.2 and 0.4 m inside diameter (i.d.) three-phase sparged reactors. The particle size and solid loading were varied in the range 12-1300 μm and 0-10 vol.% respectively. The effects of superficial gas velocity (0.020 - 0.386 m s−1), height to diameter ratio (3 - 10) and sparger design were investigated. The effect of the coalescing nature of the liquid phase was also studied. The coalescing nature was increased by increasing the liquid viscosity and reduced by the addition of aliphatic alcohol or an electrolyte to water. The foaming behaviour of three-phase sparged reactors is also presented.
