Abstract

Baylis-Hillman acetates undergo smooth nucleophilic displacement with sodium azide and sodium cyanide in water under mild conditions to afford the corresponding ethyl 2-azidomethyl-3-phenylpropenoate, 2-azidomethyl-3-phenylacrylonitrile and 2-(phenylmethylidene)succinonitrile in excellent yields.
