Abstract

The oxidation of triethylamine catalysed by Ru(III)-EDTA using molecular oxygen as an oxidant has been studied in aqueous medium. The kinetics of the reaction showed first-order dependence with respect to the catalyst and the substrate concentrations and was found to be independent of molecular oxygen. The rate was found to increase slightly with an increase in pH from 1.5 to 2.5. Based upon the experimental data, a suitable mechanism has been proposed. The products were isolated and analysed by spot tests and IR spectroscopy. The rate and equilibrium constants were also calculated.
