Abstract
A test apparatus is described for studying heat transfer to flowing subcooled He II. A fountain pump was used to generate the flow. Measurements on subcooled He II at 1 bar are reported in this Paper. The Gorter-Mellink constant and the critical heat flux were measured and compared with values reported in the literature. The mass flow rate of He II was measured as a function of the heater power on the fountain pump and correlated with the temperature drop across the fountain pump. The temperature distribution was measured along a 1 m long test section with and without He II flow and was found to be in agreement with a one-dimensional model calculation. The possibility of using a self-sustained flow of He II generated by a fountain pump to remove heat in a test section is discussed.
