Abstract

The temperature variation of the effective Gruneisen function in SrF2 is calculated on Axe's shell model and compared with experiment. In PbF2 this model predicts a negative thermal expansion at low temperatures. However it leads to imaginary frequencies for transverse acoustic modes at small wave vectors and the relevance of this result to the phase transformation in PbF2 is mentioned.
