Abstract

A mixed donor potential tetradentate ligand tris(2-(diphenylphosphino) ethyl)amine (TPEA) was synthesised by a modified procedure and characterized by 1H, 13C and 31P NMR spectral data. Ru(II) complexes of TPEA were prepared by its interaction with RuCl2(PPh3)3 and RuCl2(DMSO)4 to give [RuCl2(TPEA)] and RuCl2 (DMSO)(TPEA) respectively. Ru(III) complexes of the composition RuX3(TPEA) or [RuX2(AsPh3)(TPEA)]X were obtained by the reaction of TPEA with RuX3(AsPh3)2·MeOH (X=Cl, Br). A neutral Rh(I) complex of the composition RhCl(TPEA) was obtained by the reaction of [RhCl(COD)]2 with TPEA. Cationic metal carbonyl complexes of the type [M(CO)(TPEA)]Cl (M=Rh, Ir) were obtained by the interaction of [M(CO)Cl(PPh3)2] with TPEA. The reaction of hydrated RhCl3 with TPEA gave [RhCl2(TPEA)]Cl in methanol. A five coordinated cationic complex [PdCl(TPEA)]Cl was obtained by the reaction of PdCl42− with TPEA. Interaction of PtCl2(COD) with TPEA however gave the square planar complex [PtCl(TPEA)]Cl. All the complexes were characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods.
