Abstract
It has been found that the color index, in general, is not independent of radius, but is proportional approximately to five times the logarithm of the ratio of radii at the two wavelength bands. Two examples have been given, where this effect may be significant: (1) Large differences in effective temperatures, derived from two different color indices, may reflect the wavelength dependence of the radius. (2) Failure of and inconsistent results derived from the Wesselink method when applied to cepheid and other variable stars may be due to significant contribution from the change of the wavelength-dependent radius during the cycle.
