Abstract
Acoustic waves, hydromagnetic effect, and convective instability due to molecular dissociation are considered as mechanisms for flare activity in M dwarf stars. The first mechanism does not appear to be significant. The last two mechanisms appear to be important, though no definite conclusions can be stated of their exact roles due to the approximate nature of convective theories and hydromagnetic models.
