Abstract

Surfaces of n- and p-CdTe have been examined by Raman scattering before and after ruthenium surface modification. Prior to modification, the K2 Cr2 O7 : H2 SO4 etch followed by Na2 S2 O8 rinse was found to leave a thin layer of elemental Te on bulk CdTe, as identified from characteristic Raman lines. Ru modification led to depletion of Cd at the surface and the growth of a layer of TeO2, with CdTeO3 also being evident on p-CdTe. These results are compared with previous XPS and solar cell studies to explain the beneficial effects of surface modification.
