Abstract
The Thomas-Fermi theory was used to calculate the energy per particle, the density distribution and the single-particle potential for neutrons and protons in finite nuclei. The calculation was performed for the nuclei 208Pb, 140Ce, 120Sn and 90Zr. The binding energies per particle were 0.5-0.8 MeV too small, the rms radii of the density distributions were well reproduced, whereas the surface thickness was too small.
