Abstract
The use of discriminant function is justified only when it is known that the individual to be classified belongs to a certain subset of alternative groups. In this paper statistical methods are developed for examining whether a given individual can be supposed to have arisen from one of the populations in the subset and then using the discriminant function. The use of certain other linear functions in problems of classification of groups, prediction, etc. has also been discussed.
