Abstract
A smart structures concept is proposed in this note to enhance the buckling load of columns. Unlike the earlier researchers who tried to enhance the buckling load by increasing the mode of buckling, a new method is proposed here to increase the buckling load by using the follower forces, which can be easily applied by employing piezoelectric actuators. The concept is demonstrated through an example of the buckling of an isotropic, uniform cantilever column with an end compressive concentrated load.
